Why You Need a Website as a Musician

In this day and age, you might be wondering if it’s worth actually investing in a website as a musician, but it absolutely is. Your website should be the cornerstone of your marketing. Especially if you’re an indie or DIY artist, you need a website because you need a hub that contains everything. But you might be wondering why you can’t just get away with a Facebook page or Instagram profile for that. So, let’s look at it a little closer.

You don’t own your social media

This is the big one. The reality is that social media is outside of your control. You don’t own your follower list, and you don’t even really own your content. They can shut down your page at any time because they ultimately have control. This means you could put in months or even years of work and lose it overnight with no chance of getting back. We’ve all heard the horror stories of Meta refusing to give people their accounts back.

Whereas you own your website. You have complete control over the look and the content. You can even download the content at any time if you decide to migrate to a different platform. No one can take your website from you.

You can do more with a website

A website is so much more powerful and versatile than a social media profile. Your website can store your bio, your events, your important links, and your landing page. You can even host or link to your merch store, depending on your platform.

But more than that, your website is something you control that you can use for a landing page, your EPK (electronic press kit), and social media link in bio. If you host your landing page, EPK, and link in bio on your site, you have more access to analytics, and you have more power over your look/content. This is crucial if you’re running ads as well because you’ll need a landing page for that unless you’re running directly to Spotify. No sense in paying for other services that can get you exactly what a website can, but better.

It’s easier to collect emails

Truly, an email list is one of your biggest marketing must-haves. Your email subscribers already bought into you, so it’s an amazing asset when it comes to releasing new music, selling merch, and getting people to your shows. And the best way to collect emails is through your website. You can use a combination of a pop-up and some banners to give your audience a way to sign up for your list and, therefore, connect with you.

It’s a great way to show off your brand

Your brand is such a crucial part of selling your music, even if you wish it wasn’t. Your brand is how you connect with your current and future fans because it makes them feel like they know and understand you. If you’re trying to hit absolutely everyone, you might struggle to find your footing at first. Branding is how you present yourself to the world, and that’s crucial when you’re working on getting your music out there. And your website is the perfect place to build up your brand because you control the visuals, the photos, and the copy.

Overall, a website just gives you more control over your central hub. It can do literally everything for you and essentially works as a place for your fans to land. It doesn’t need to be fancy either, and there are a few options out there depending on how tech-savvy you are. I recommend sticking with WordPress, Squarespace, or Showit when it comes to your website. (If you’re willing to take a learning curve or hire out, WordPress.org is best.)
